Sanding on the 5-axis machine...

The proportion of 5-axis machines is increasing every year. These machines become even more powerful through the use of additional units such as the COLLEVO+ belt sanding unit from BENZ Tooling.

At Bietsch Holzverarbeitung, doors are formatted and sanded completely in a single operation. The advantage: the processing time per workpiece is reduced enormously, with more precise results.

... in a single step

Bietsch Holzbearbeitung in Ofterschwang, with its 30 employees, is specialized in door and window production. Large orders of up to 100 identical workpieces are nothing unusual. What is special, however, is the manufacturing process:

“We manufacture doors entirely in a one-step process on our HOMAG Venture 316XXL 5-Achs-Maschine,” reports company owner Franz-Xaver Bietsch.

Significant improvement in time and quality

This is possible thanks to the COLLEVO+ belt sanding unit from BENZ Tooling. “We cut the raw material to size and then process the edges with the belt sander. At the end, we receive a finished workpiece from the machine. This is a significant improvement in terms of both time and quality compared to our previous manufacturing process,” adds the senior manager.

Previously, the doors were placed on a special edge sanding machine after cutting. In addition to an extra step, this meant inconvenient handling for the employees.

Furthermore, the results achieved on the edge sanding machine are more prone to errors and not as precise as results achieved with the CNC unit. This is because the rigidity of the sanding surface, combined with the oscillating movements of the unit, ensures dimensionally accurate sanding with excellent surface qualities.

Simplified handling and huge time savings

In order to ensure that the sanding belt runs centrically during processing, the angle of the roller can be adjusted. In addition, the sanding belt is blown clean by integrated blow nozzles during the machining process – an important factor in increasing the service life of the sanding belt and resulting in perfect surface quality.

"At first, we were skeptical about the sanding belt and its service life. But here, too, we were happily surprised. The unit works with standard sanding belts available on the market. We pay around 50 cents for the sanding belt we use (560 mm long / 100 mm high / 120 grit) and can process between 20 and 30 doors with it. In retrospect, the sanding medium plays a minor role for us. Even changing the sanding belt is quick and easy, taking just 30 seconds. Much more important to us is the simplified handling and the enormous time savings we have achieved with the belt sander. We also like the option of renting the unit from BENZ Tooling on a trial basis. This allows you to see the advantages for yourself in advance."
