Jana Apfelbacher stands as a synonym for what makes the Rosenheim State Technical College so famous worldwide: highly qualified young wood technicians with a faible for innovative, high-quality solutions. For in her project work, the student took a completely new road. She produced lampshades from veneer parts laminated on one side entirely by machine on a HOMAG processing center. For this, the SECO cutting unit from Haslach-based tool technology specialist BENZ was used.
Ahead through the latest CNC technology
The young student was supported by her project supervisor Josef Oberniedermaier, who, together with his colleagues at the technical college, attaches great importance to high-quality training for his students. "In addition to first-class theoretical training, our students should also work with the latest technology. Technological advancement is part of our philosophy." Therefore, a cutting unit has also been part of the CNC park in Rosenheim since 2015. "We initially received a test unit from BENZ, through which we were able to familiarize ourselves with machine cutting. Cutting on a machining center was something completely new for us. We had to look at the possible applications first and work out approaches to solutions." In addition to logo cutting, this quickly included inlay work.
Precise cuts - just how it works
Jana Apfelbacher also came into contact with the unit during the practical CNC training sessions. And thus to a new approach to a solution for her project work. "Initially, I still drew the individual elements of the lampshades by hand and cut them out of the solid material with a conventional cutting knife. However, I was not satisfied with the quality and the duration of the processing." By using the cutting aggregate, she had to put extra work into CNC software development, but received clean contour-cut parts in a fraction of the time. "The advantage of the aggregate is the precise cutting, especially with tight radii and sharp corners," knows BENZ designer Verena Hauser. " The downholder that' s used presses the workpiece firmly onto the machining table while the cutter makes precise cuts." Jana Apfelbacher also came up with a solution for securely clamping the veneer on the machine and designed a device in which a vacuum is created on the surface through a chamber system and a bottom plate with suction through the vacuum connection of the processing center, which sucks in the workpiece. To increase the effect, the veneer is also covered with commercially available foil. An idea for which she took the textile industry as a guide.

"Transferring the previously manual manufacturing process to the machining center has significantly reduced the manufacturing time for a lampshade, but increased the workpiece quality," Jana Apfelbacher summarizes her project success. "I now only take the finished, contour-cut parts from the machine and put them into shape." With her project idea, the young student has not only inspired her supervisors, but also the aggregate manufacturer BENZ. "We are thrilled with this smart idea," says Verena Hauser. "And it is once again a positive example of what can come out of the exchange between manufacturer and user."
